THE SUN PROJECT

In early 2010 a loved one of MJ's underwent treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Because he lives in another part of the country, MJ was unable to be by his side while he struggled to save his life, but she wanted to send her love and support to let him know that she was thinking about him everyday. MJ began to create a daily personal greeting card for him. No matter where she was in the world or what was happening in her own life, she sat down to draw a sun for him, placed it in an envelope, and mailed it to him, in hopes that he might feel that he was not alone in his struggle. Hundreds of suns were drawn, painted, collaged, sewn and delivered to him during this challenging time. He spent over 200 nights in the hospital, along with follow up day-trips to receive transfusions and general check-ups. He is, thankfully, now in full recovery with no sign of a recurrence.

THE CITY CONTAINER PROJECT

In 2009 the Artisan Gallery in Paoli Wisconsin asked many artists to participate in a group show where each artist was asked to create "a piece as a container”. MJ used an old glass milk container that was once used for serving milk to school children as the container to contain a city, expanding on the idea that a container is anything that holds anything. A city is it’s own container holding it’s land, buildings and people. Using mixed media, acrylic paints, found objects and fibers, MJ created a building inside each bottle- a theatre, a museum, a zoo, a hospital, a bank, galleries, and many other buildings common to a city, 36 in total.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS

In 2000, MJ was asked to illustrate three children's books for Treehaus Communications along with several designs for limited edition posters and notecards.
